Beginner seeks good books on Java

Hi! I am from Singapore and am working in a really tightly budgeted civil service. I used to work in a company dealing with database development before this. Now, I am maintaining an intranet and would like to know if there are any books on Java I can buy that provides enough comprehensive material for both beginners to intermediate? Does anyone have experience with using Alliare ColdFusion? I used MS Frontpage 2000 – it was easy to use but could not seem to do anything more than superficial. Any help would be so much appreciated. Thanks
