Best method for backup of h/d to CD-RW

Using HP CD-Writer Plus, what is the best procedure to follow to make a full backup of my (partitioned) hard drive? Do I need to buy additonal software, or is there a “quick and easy” way to do it. I have approximately 3.5 gig of total space used (programs and data). I prefer to back up everything, and do supplemental backups later.
