BI maturity by industry

I’m currently making a research in Business Intelligence.
My hypothesis is BI was first applied in the financial industry.
Does this mean BI’s level of maturity is the strongest among industries?
What would be the level of maturity for retail, pharmaceuticals, telcom, manufacturing?
How would you measure the level of maturity: years BI suites have been available for specific industry?, investment in BI by industry?
