BIOS update

by al . Updated 24 years, 4 months ago

Hardware: HP Pavillion 8665c PC
O/S: Windows 98 SE

I updtated my BIOS per the HP web site. (http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/software/merc_210.exe.html). I believe the update was successful as the BIOS lists the new version.

However, I am receiving an error message when rebooting.

During reboot, I receive the following error:
“Expansion ROM not initialized-PCI Mass Storage Controller on
Motherboard.
Bus:01, Device:OB, Function:00”
(Note: I have installed a SCSI card(in a PCI slot) for an external hard drive and have
added 128mb of memory for a total of 256 mb.)

It gives me the option to hit F1 to enter set-up or F2 to resume.

If I hit F1: It takes me to the BIOS screen, where per the update instructions, I hit F5 to update settings and F10 to save settings and enter to exit. It then reboots back to the same error above.
If I hit F2: It asks me to proceed with an update (Y/N).
If I choose
yes,
then I get the following error:
“Cannot flash when memory managers (e.g. EMM386) are present.”
If I choose no, then it reboots to windows.

I do not want to go through this process every time I reboot.

Please help so that I can boot without any errors.

Can I take my BIOS back to the settings prior to this upgrade?

Can I set the BIOS not to scan the Expansion ROM?
