Bizarre email/dial-up connection problem

My client has an older Compaq laptop running Win98. It has previously operated exclusively on the company’s network. The user now wants to take it with her to check her email on the road. The laptop has a built-in modem. I set up a dial-up connection and the laptop definitely does connect to their ISP and can surf the web. It cannot however connect to the mail server. The connection times out. When other laptops are configured the same way they have no problems surfing or checking email. When Icheck netstat I can see the laptop trying to open a connection to the mail server, but it never registers a response. Is their some setting in Windows that I’m not thinking of that would allow a user to surf the web, but not check email over a dial-up connection? Should I try reinstalling DUN? I really don’t want to mess with this too much because it is not the reason that I am at this client’s site. I am there on an unrelated project, but since I said I’d look at it they are pressuring me to fix it. Additionally,
