Black squares for icons?

hi!
I’m running win98se and all my icons when they are small, like when u change ‘view’ to ‘list’, are all black squares. Then the squares mutated and became half squares or half squares with horizontal lines through them…still black and still small icons. And this only occurs when they are small…when they are the larger icons they are perfectly normal.
So…help! do i have a virus? becuase it also seems i am losing all my drivers too…my pc freezes all the time and i cant get my work off it. Help please!
