blue screen of death – low on memory

by sdsmoot . Updated 24 years, 5 months ago

owner built NEW computer: Pentium 4 processor (478 pin) , Intel D845WN Desktop board, 80 gig harddrive, 765 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 8500 video card, Soundblaster Live 5.1 card, Windows 98 SE, keeps giving me the blue screen with the instructions: low system memory, please close applications etc…. when I dont even have other things running. When I ctrl-atl-delete to see what is running in the background, i dont know what all the words mean so I dont want to close something I may need. (Is there alist of what those things mean?) Actually I havent even installed MS Office, i dont think i will have enough memory…The 2 biggest installations have been the Soundblaster “complete” installation and “complete” Norton Systemworks…. Often (but not everytime) windows tells me that Norton Antivirus did not have enough memory to load and things lock up. I have installed BIOS updates and tried RAMBooster…Windows as well as my BIOS tells me i have 765 MB RAM. but what is cashe RAM? I only have 256 MB of cashe RAM… been re-formating and trouble shooting ever since Christmas. PLEASE HELP!!
