Boot up

PC — Runs the POST fine, Windows 98 logo screen comes up fine, after that I get a screen of multiple lines. I believe it must be an error message because when I hit escape and y (twice) it will automatically shut down the computer. I have run Scandisk–no errors, I can get it to boot to Safe mode (sometimes). Help, please
