Burning of CD.

What are the proper steps in burning CD to CD using only a CD Writer?
I had Nero burning sortware but when burn image from a folder, i cant read the finally product.
Do i need a support software? Pls help.
System Spec: Win2000 Pro, 256 Ram, PIII 1G.
