Can not insert picture in Word

Every time I try to insert a picture in a word document it gives me a error message:WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff9db61.

then I have to close it down and when I try to open the same file again it says that it is in use. Help
