For instance, can I swap the platters of a failed drive into a known good identical drive and get it to read long enough to recover a few files? Us yahoos on other message boards want to try it. We don’t want to spend the big bucks just to get thefew MB of un-backed up info off the drive.
Here’s a typical scenario: drive spins but head-arm ass’y just clicks back and forth for ~ a minute and then stops. Can get a DIR, but attempts to read result in interminable clicking again. Replacing the controller card on the drive doesn’t help. Neither do the other tips from 200 Ways…
If it can be done, where can we find instructions on disassembly/reassembly?
Please, no chastising about backing up, Class 100 clean rooms etc. This is down and dirty DIY.
