I’m working on a friends computer. Pemtium II 300Mhz. When I would boot it, I would get a message saying some files were missing. FAT32 and Himem.sys were among things that were missing. I tried to reload Windows 98 and the moment I would type setupin DOS it would run Scandisk. Scandisk would just stop during the scan stating “Error”. No “would you like to fix this error?” It would just freeze. Even when I tried a format c: it would run scandisk and do the same thing. I went into Fdisk and deleted the active partition then added it again. This time it looked promising. Format C: ran normal. The installation of Windows 98 was normal except when it would restart the computer it would say “windows was not shut down properly” and would run scandisk. The first time it did this, it found and repaired an error – but would proceed with the installation. Once windows was completely installed I restarted the computer again. This time it wouldn’t boot to the desktop. It gave me a message in DOS which said:
While initializing device VKD:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer
Press any key
When I would restart, I would get the same message as above. What do I need to do to fix this problem? Please help! Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
