cannot see network

I have a compaq workstation that cannot see the network. At first, I thought it was the patchcord, but I hooked up my laptop and it worked fine. I have checked and rechecked the network settings and everything ok. Still can’t see network on compaq. I pull the workstation and hooked it up direct to hub. At this point it sees the network. I bring it back to that original port and it still doesn’t see the network…
