can’t map to server

currently running winnt server, have win98 machined trying to map. server can acess all machines and folders, but recently all pc’s can’t access the mapped drives. hard drive on server was making funny noises and i am planning on replaceing it. But would this cause the server to act as if it was’t up and running? other pc’s can actually ping and see shared folders on server but can’t access them.
