can’t print range

In WindowsME using Word 2000 printing to a Canon S400 (usb or parallel)when selecting a range to print nothing happens. It is like Word ignores the command.
A range 1-90 was sent (successfully) but it stopped at page 34 and now the above occurres.If told “print current” – ok
If told “print all” – ok
If told “print range 1,2,3” – no go
Have reinstalled printer drivers changed it to parallel from usb, rebooted everything – no change.
