CD & DVD Drive Problem in XP

After installing XP, my 2 CD drives (cd & dvd) no longer read from a disk. I get format errors from either drive. When I re-install the drivers they work one time only and then quit. They seem to be in conflict but I can find no Bangs anywhere toshow a conflict. Has anyone else had this problem in XP & is there a fix?
