CD-Rom Drive not recognized

I had a machine that the cd-rom slide had been removed. Upon trying to install a similar drive in it’s place, the unit doesn’t recognize it. I tried to install thru Hardware Mgr., but no go. It is a Hitachi 24x. I downloaded a driver from mfr., but nothing.
Anyone know a trick to this?
