CD-ROM Problems

my cd-rom isn’t working in ms-dos or windows. It shows a cd-rom drive in windows but gives device not ready error when trying to access. The cd-rom has power and the unit isn’t very old. It was reading some discs before but know it’s not reading anything. I tried taking out the driver for the cd rom and reinstalling it but can’t get it to reinstall. Please help. Even if I get the driver reinstalled i’m still not sure how to handle the original problem.
