Changing Monitor Color

I have tried to change the color setting of my computer to 256 colors or more (16bit or 32bit colors) and I have not been successful. After I changed it, I restart my computer and it goes back to 16 colors. I have tried so many times and have not had any luck. Please help! Please respond immediately. Thanks.
