changinging motherboards

i just replaced my motherboard. everything else is the same. but i can’t boot up. will my hard drive continue to function with the new motherboard without my having to do anything else? i thought all i had to do was change boards and power up and i would be ready to go. what should i do right after i finish making all the connections and power up?
