CMOS Battery

We have several pc’s that were built by a local vendor. All are about 3 years old and it seems they all started “freezing up” around the same time. Will a bad CMOS battery cause this? I heard that these batteries had a service life of 3 years. Ihave tried everything else and cannot find the cause of the problem.
