Comfix.exe conflict with Kernel32.dll

I am having a problem installing a CLM data / fax / voice. When I try to install the drivers I get an error that states “comfix.exe created an invalid page fault at Kernel32.dll at 0177:bff886e7”

So the modem never gets assigned a COM port.

The computer is a PC running Windows 98 SE. Has anyone ever found a solution to this problem that doesn’t involve reinstalling the operating system?
