I have an interesting situation that is baffling me and hope someone can help:
I have multiple Compaq DeskPro EN 1Ghz with 128MB RAM running Windows 98SE and standard desktop applications (i.e. MS Office, Crosstalk, Photoshop, etc.).
With a few of these units we experience an intermitent problem where the desktop will lock-up, therefore not allowing any thing to actually be “clicked”, yet the mouse pointer moves freely (occasionally the pointer will also lock up). This forces a hard bootto get things running again. This only seems to occur when the user has been away from the PC for a period of time (45 minutes to 1 hour or more). And it does not seem to matter if there are applications opened / minimized or not either.
I havealready dealt with the power management features in the Control Panel and turned those features off – the PC no longer goes into “lower power stand-by”, and the hard drive no longer is set to power down either. I have also turned off power management in the BIOS thinking that this might address the issue – but no such luck. This issue also seems to have occurred on our Compaq DeskPro EN 733 & 866 PC’s as well but only sporadically.
What could I possibly be missing other than those things Ihave already checked? If anyone has any ideas or experiences with an issue such as this, please help me out.
Thanks.
