Compaq Presario 460 floppy drive

I am trying to set up an old Compaq Presario 460 for a friend and I can’t get it to acknowledge the floppy drive. There is an error saying that there is an error with the floppy drive controller. I have recently installed a 1.44 MB drive. Does ituse the old 720 K drives? Thanks
