Computer slowing down

Hello,
recently my dell optiplex gs pc with windows 98 has been getting choppy when applications like word and excel as well as all games are open, also it begins to slow down and if it is on for more than about 30 minutes the computer slows down so much you cant get the screensaver off, it is not frozen
does anybody know how to fix this or where i can get help?
