Converting Old Fonts

I’m having difficulty getting new versions of Quark Express to work with ancient PostScript fonts (‘pre’93). Unfortunately, we have no choice but to work with these, and purchasing updated fonts is a last resort. Why is it that some of these fonts work, others don’t and others give inconsistant results? Is there a way to convert these fonts without having to repurchase what will be literally thousands of dollars for replacement fonts?
