damaged hard drive??

The drive was working fine untill I attempted to reinstall the Operating System. On installing Windows 2000 or NT 4.x, after I select the partition, I get the following message:

“Setup encoiuntered an error whil updating partition information on 7559 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi”

What does this mean?
How do I repair this issue?

Any ideas or utilities I can use to troubleshoot would be appreciated.
