DDR RAM conflict causing app failure

I have a 1.4 AMD machine with ASUS A7M266 mb. I had 256 meg installed and upgraded to an additional 256 meg of 266mhz DDR RAM. With the second stick installed applications close at random and the computer reboots at random. Obviously a conflict of some kind, but is it servicable?
