Dell wont work with MMX CPU’s anymore

by computechie . Updated 24 years, 7 months ago

Hi all,
I got a old Dell GN+ that was on it’s way to the trash because it didn’t work anymore. I brought it home, did a little troubleshooting, and tried swapping the CPU, the original was a 233 MMX, and I swapped in a 166 non-MMX, and the machine started working. I tested the 233 out of the Dell machine in another machine, and the CPU works great. I also tried swapping in a known-good 233 MMX out of another machine into the Dell, and it refused to boot. I was wondering if anyone had seen thison a old Dell, where it all the sudden wont work with a MMX cpu, but works great with a non-MMX? I’ve already looked through the BIOS for any settings that might have been messed up, found nothing out of the ordinary, and reset the BIOS to make sure, but nothing seems to make the MMX CPU’s work.
