DeskJets will not print in grayscale

Problem occurs on 2 ptrs. on separate systems.

1) HP 710c attached to standalone Win98 sys..
2) HP 895Cse attached to Win95 server, as local ptr., shared on MS-Net LAN.

Both ptrs. ignore control panel settings to print in gray-scale.
Whethersettings are in effect at boot-up, or are changed during session, makes no difference.
