desktop/shortcut

I’ve upgraded to xp pro and was making a shoertcut to the desktop.What I have instead of a cmall icon is the link homepage banner.This banner is a smaller version of the homepage and is partly covering some icons on the desktop;displaying about a 3″x3″ area. Any ideas what tab I’m looking for thanks jerry
