Dial-Up problem

When I try to connect my laptop to a phone line with more that one line I get no dial tone. FOr example I used a phone line from a hotel front desk that has 6 lines and hooked it up to my laptop. When I try to dial-in there is not dialtone. Is thereaddition software/hardware that is needed to get this working? Any advice would be appreciated.
