Disappearing partitions

I have a user that has an 8GB EIDE drive that had been partitioned into four logical partitions. Then he calls me and tells me that d:, e:, and f: have disappeared from Windows Explorer.
What has happened, and how can I fix it without formatting the drive and losing data?
