Disk compression

I have been handed an Ibm Aptiva to fix.
The problem is the owner was running out of storage space and decided to compress the hdd.Is there a way to uncompress the drive without losing all the data as the machine starts up then shuts it self off after the boot sequence or will it require a clean install.
