Duplicating Desktop Shortcuts

My son has a Pansonic Tuff Talker (w/a Touch Screen). All of a sudden it started duplicating the desktop shortcuts (17 times each) and wound up deleting everything in My Documents, including subdirectories and their contents. We checked w/Norton and no virus. Any ideas?
