dvd “create overlay” error

I have a Compaq 866 computer with DVD. The computer came with win 98 installed, but I upgraded it to Win 2000 Pro. Now whenever I try to view a DVD movie using intervideo, I get an “create overflow” error. How can I correct this problem.
One of theguys on the job corrected the problem on his similar PC, but claims to have forgotten how he did it.
