DVD Drive won’t play DVD movies

by wellsedj . Updated 25 years, 4 months ago

I have a Compaq Presario desktop computer, operating system W98 SE. The DVD Drive quit playing DVD movies. I can still play audio CDs, install programs from CDs such a Microsoft Office 2000, and play video games that require a CD to be in the DVD drive. The DVD drive is a Compaq SR-8583, which is really a Panasonic SR-8583. The DVD drive firmware version is A50A, and it is set for Region 1. The DVD movies I have tried to play were purchased in the USA, so I assume movies are Region 1. The DVD player software is Mediamatics (National Semiconductor) version 4. I have tried Compaq Support but to no avail, their solution was to remove my DVD drive from the Device Manager window while in Safe Mode and then restart my computer. I have made no hardware changes to the computer, and I have the original restore disk. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
