DVD Sound Problem

I have a friend of mine who went to play a DVD movie and only got a picture and no sound. When he puts a regular music CD into the DVD drive he the sound works just fine. The audio cable is connected between the DVD ROM drive and the Sound Card. Any ideas on what may be going on?
