DVD WON’T play DVD movies

I am getting the following error: “Create Overlay failed. Please lower your screen resolution or color depth and try again.” when I try to play a DVD. I am running windows 2000 sp2. I have installed ActiveX8a. I have uninstalled and reinstalledthe video and DVD drivers (Intervideo 2.1, ati rage mobility). I have been able to play DVD’s in the past but all of a sudden seem incapable. I have tried all sorts of combinations of the refresh rate, screen size, and color settings. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
