e-mail/norton anti-virus freezeup

I am running win/me with nav/nsw 2002.I continue to get freezeup upon logging in.;usually with2 or more e-mail to be scanned.The freezeup occurs after the 3rd email is being scanned.My sys/tray consists of basic utilities nav/nsw-autoprotect.Any ideas.The freezeups occur more regular it seems.I was having problems with the IP ;being disconnected from the net.I use sympatico/outlook express/ie6
