Error Code 31

The “A” drive on my W2K computer is showing error code 31. THe Microsoft Knowledge BAse indicates another piece of hardware causes the problem but there are no indications of any other problems. The floppy works on W98 (Dual Boot) and reinstall doesnot solve the problem. It behaves in the same way in Safe Mode. Any suggestions please.
