Floppy Drive running Intermitantly

A floppy drive on a computer runs at irregular intervals on a Cyrix 200MHz PC with Windows 98 Upgrade installed and Office 97 Professional. It seems as if the drive is performing a write operation when not asked to do so. How can this be resolved.
