Fonts / Menus not displaying correctly

When running certain programs on my PC, the fonts of the words which are supposed to be dispayed are being displayed incorrectly. Instead of letters, there are 0000000000’s being displayed. I have gone into the fonts folder and the previews of a number of fonts are doing the same thing. If anybody could shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.
