Freeze Up

I run Win ME and I.E. 6.0 with DSL. When I am on line, be it e-mail or surfing on the net, my system seems to freeze up (hang) every 5 minutes. Then if I patiently wait for about 1 minute normal operations restart. Any clues what might be causeing this problem.
