Freezing after accessing floppy drive

I am running Windows 95 on a DTK computer and it is freezing frequently. It seems to happen after the floppy drive is grinding as if the system is trying to save to the drive. How can I correct this? I thought it was Word autosaving, but it happens when nothing is open. Please help me anyone.
