Getting a USR VEverything modem to work

by berkmberk1 . Updated 23 years, 8 months ago

I have a client with a modem problem that is a real stumper. Its a non-profit that was given a custom built system: Windows 98, Duron 950, 256 RAM, and a USR Courier VEverything internal modem. They would like to use this system for internet access but currently use it only for office productivity since they can’t get the modem working.

I volunteered to fix it for them. The modem seems to be “functional” (in fact it is/was new) I have used all the current updates for it. I have modified the init string countless ways. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the thing. I have run the setup disk many times and Windows has installed the modem many times. The best that happens is dial-up and handshake. It will not connect!

USR supporthas been no help, and other modem sites give me no clue as to how to fix this particular problem.

Besides having to be done on the “cheap” (read free) it has become sort of a personal challenge to get this thing working!

Any USR Courier experts out there? Does anyone have one that works? I’ve heard they are really good!

Mike
