GNOME or KDE – which in the better?

I’m investigating Linux as a possible desktop environment for our corporation (we have a number of older machines that won’t run Windows 2000/XP) and I’m waffling between recommending GNOME or KDE as the desktop of choice? Does anyone out there havea strong preference for one or the other? Better apps, better stability, customisability, better resource management, anything that makes one stand out over the other?
