hard disk detection

in the morning after surfing the net,i shut off my pc and left.inthe evening when o returned my 2.1 gb hdd is nor\t being detected.i took it to my friends place but no result.did my hdd crash? will i be able too recover my data?
guys!please help asfast as possible
