hard disk refuses to complete Scandisk .

My hard disk will not complete the scandisk test when it is selected from accessories/system tools.It seems to take forever to load new programs and ofter fails to load them. The drive seems to be repeatedly searching for something or repeatedly trying to write something. In other cases it will work ok. It may run existing programs ok.
