Harddisk Partition Problem!!

I have a problem with my harddisk when I try to partition it the message appearing was “Unable to access Drive 1”. But there is a existing C drive 2.5 GB that can be formatted, the problem are it keep hanging-out everytime I install a software program.
Is there anyway this harddisk can be fix. Its
a Maxtor 10GB harddisk.
